Stylish Notes to Sing

The fifth hour choir class is constantly exposed to new styles of music and new languages. They learn that the five hours per week spent perfecting their musical pieces pay off when a performance is being planned for. They try to sing songs that require no accompainment or "a cappella."
"Whether it be in Latin or English, the choir usually accepts the music with a frown, but they decide to like it in the end," said Dirk Colgrove, instructor.
Special preparations have to be made to successfully compete at music competitions. The choosing of the music is very important. Two art songs that contrast stylistically are chosen. One of these songs is sometimes in foreign language. The group then learns the notes and interprets the music. They try to make the music interesting to listen to.
"Sometimes we record ourselves so we can evaluate how we are progressing with each song," said Colgrove.
The time and effort put into musical pieces is sometimes overlooked, but the final creations are appreciated by all who hear.
