Each summer the Nemaha Valley Drill Team attends the
Universal Dance Association Camp, usually at Emporia State University.
The team prepares a home routine to take to camp to perform and get
a rating on.
There are a variety of routines, with varying levels
of difficulty, to learn at camp including pom, hip hop, jazz, and
kick at levels 1-5. The squad sends about three girls to learn any
routine they would like to bring home with them and each girl gets
to learns three routines along with a novelty routine just for fun.
The week can be very stressful because at the end, each
girl performs the three routines she learned in front of the camp
with the other girls she learned the routine with. She is rated and
receives a blue, red, or white ribbon for each routine. She will also
be required to teach that routine to the rest of her squad when they
return from camp.
"Camp is usually the thing that bonds the team
together because you depend on your teammates to get through those
really tough days," said Erica Roeder, Junior member.
