Last amid the hustle and bustle of football and volleyball, the so-called "big shot" fall sports, lies the seemingly little-known competition of cross country. The cross country team had been discontinued for a couple of years at Nemaha Valley, and some of our students didn't even know we had such a squad. Nevertheless, the Nemaha Valley harriers carried on, and Mr. Eric Buetzer, the cross country coach, explained to us what makes up a harrier.
"I guess the thing about cross country is self motivation. There are no crowds, no bands, just self reward. This in itself is very impressive."
Mr. Buetzer was very pleased with the five runners coming out and representing the school. He was especially proud of Curt, who finished as the third fastest sophomore in 3A, quite an accomplishment for a first year runner.
Mr. Buetzer concluded by saying, "Next year, I would enjoy seeing two or three more runners coming out that could complement Curt and make up a team. I also would enjoy a few girls coming out, because girls competition is kind of weak, and we could have a good girls' team." - 1985 Yearbook Staff
