Self-motivation and the team's determination are the main aspects of cross country success. The Nemaha Valley cross country team carried both of these traits throughout the 1993 season. Each member of the team had both mental and physical successes during the year. Whether it was overcoming injuries and sickness or beating a rival during competition, each had their own victories.
In previous years, there have been many girls' teams at NV. However, this year was different. Seven out of the nine runners were boys, which meant they could compete as a team. The two girls competed individually.
Two of the boys were Nemaha Valley's foreign exchange students, Roland Nagy from Hungary, and Arnaud Meissonnier from Germany. Meissonnier however, was unable to complete the season due to a weightlifting accident.
"I had a good time in cross country; one that I'll never forget. Although I don't think I accomplished what I could have, it was a great experience for me," said Nagy.
Meissonnier stated, "I was very disappointed when I had to quit the team. I liked the competiton, and I was improving every day."
In the reginonal meet at Hayden High School, Terri Risinger took ninth place against tough competition, while Crissy Heinen won it for the second year in a row. Those two moved on to state in Wamego the next weekend. There, Terri placed forty-sixth, and Crissy took ninth after coming down with a cold.
Coach Eric Buetzer said, "Overall all I think we had a successful season, especially being such a young team. I'm looking forward to next year and expecting even more victories." - Sara
