Slow intervals? Pace per mile runs? Lactic acids? Pasture runs? Continuous miles? What can it all mean? It's just the cross country team's grueling practice.
The cross country team had a full team with 18 people, 8 girls and 10 boys. It was a very young team consisting of mostly sophomores and freshmen. There was only one returning senior, Kim Kohake. The young team fared well all season without the help of many experienced runners.
In regular season meets, the boys' team always managed to place in the top four teams and the girls placed in the top five.
The boys' cross country team place second and the girls' cross country team placed third at the Big 7 League tournament in Holton. Regionals brought a second place finish for both the boys and girls teams. Moving on to state in Wamego, the harriers on the boys' team placed eighth and the girls' team placed ninth.
The practices for cross country were filled with running, of course, and weight training. They did pasture runs out in the country and usually ended up washing their shoes when they unexpectedly stepped in something.
Although both teams had many underclassmen, they were very successful. For example, Bryan Clark placed 16th at the state tournament. The future years for cross country are sure to be just as promising.
"I can't wait until next year when I'm a year older and a year better," Dustin, fr., said. - Myka
