For the first time in the history of Nemaha Valley cross country, the boy's ended the season with a third place finish at state, placing the first cross country banner on the wall. They had a full team consisting of fifteen boys and seven girls.
The boys' team always managed to finish in the top three and the girls finished in the top seven at all the meets they ran in. At the Big Seven League Tournament in Royal Valley, the girls placed sixth and the boys placed a remarkable first. At that point in the season they were definitely showing great potential for state.
Next came Regionals which were held in Horton. The girls' team finished in seventh place and were unable to qualify for state competition.
"The girls had a disappointing year, but we all still had fun," Cindy Glissman, soph., said.
The boys' team, however, went home with another first place trophy. Bryan and Ryan qualified to compete at state individually, but with the first place finish, the entire team had qualified for state.
Finally came the real test, State, and the boys' cross country team was ready for the challenge. The boys worked as a team, and after a bit of controversy, came home with third place.
"The team was happpy with our place at state but next year we will do better," Bryan, jr., said.
Bryan and Ryan finished individually in the top ten with Bryan placing third and Ryan placing ninth.
Yes, it was a big year for the cross country team, and with most of the runners returning next year, the future looks just as fulfilling. - Natalie
