Nemaha Valley came upon stormy seas during the '84-85 season, after sailing to a state championship at Hutchinson in March of '84. The Raiders finished 9-11 this year, including 7-8 against Big 7 Teams.

The Raiders fell upon rocky times early, as they dropped the first four games, although they only lost to Jackson Heights and Hiawatha by a combined total of three points. The Purple rolled back after the New Years break, however, going 5-2 and evening their record to 6-6 as they headed into February. One of these victories included the exciting game at the Nemaha Valley Invitational, where Barry Engelken's last second "Hail Mary" at half court propelled the Raiders to a fifth place finish in the tournament.

Once again, Nemaha Valley had trouble containing Holton and its' 6'8 two-time all-state forward John Wallisch, who scored 39 points in the two Wildcats victories. Coach Getzlaff, the team, and our supporters will be glad to see Wallsich move on to Washburn for college, for the big man has given them trouble since he was a sophomore, the first of three years when he was unanimous All-League.

The season came to an end on Tuesday, Febuary 26, at the hands of Basehor, 46-44, at the Bobcat's gym. The Raiders fell behind 30-18 at halftime, but outscored14-6 in the third quarter. A missed last second shot delivered Basehor their first sub-state win. They lost the next game, however, to eventual sub-state champion Jackson Heights.

Barry Engelken recieved All-League honors for the second year and became the first Raider to be All- Class two years in a row. He averaged 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. Shawn Rottinghaus, a junior, also averaged 13 points a game, including a 20 point outburst in the season finale against Basehor.
