Eric puts a shot over the long reach of Hiawatha's Jim

Nemaha Valley certainly was in the hands of fate this year. Coach Dennis Getzlaff and his team went through many trying times as they dealt with inexperience, injuries, and inconsistency which caused an occasional juggling of the starting lineup. But, on the other hand, it was a good season, despite the teams 9-11 finish, as they knocked off Big Seven rival Holton, 56-51, a team the Raiders had not defeated in three years. Then they defeated a tough Royal Valley club, 61-52, in the season finale. Nemaha Valley finished 7-7, .500, in the Big Seven.

The Raiders started the season on the right foot, as they swamped Hiawatha, 70-53, before being overpowered by Holton and Sabetha before Christmas.

The season picked up however, as the team captured three consecutive victories, one a 58-53 decision over Jackson Heights, and the Raiders entered the Nemaha Valley Invitational second seeded. Everything did not go according to plans, however, as they dropped the first two contest to Mid-East League opponents, Rossville and St. Marys, before demolishing Falls City in the finale, 85-45.

Even though Nemaha Valley did lose a few big ones after the tournament break, the Holton and Royal Valley games will certainly rest in the minds of the players and fans for awhile. Nemaha's chances were bleak in both games, but extra effort and hustle paid off in the end.

The Raiders suffered a heartbreaking loss in the first round of sub-state, when they were defeated in overtime by the Horton Chargers, 53-48. Nemaha Valley led through most of the game, but Horton caught the squad and sent the contest into overtime, and then three different Chargers scored in overtime to end the Raiders' hopes.

Shawn a 6'1 senior and Harold, a 6'3 junior, were named to the Big Seven Honorable Mention team.

Yoo-hoo, Chargers! Over here!! Darrin
