The road to Hutchinson, site of the 3A championship, was paved with success after success. NV went start to finish holding the top spot. The Raiders cruised through the Kaw Valley Classic tourney without the slightest sign of competition. The Big-7 League appeared to be of no danger to the dominate Raider machine. However, an upstart Holton team sent shock waves that threatened to unseat number one.

They went into the NV Raider Classic bent on taking first. No one could have stopped the Raiders on their way to first place in their own tourney.

The Wild Bunch possessed a 13-0 record just over halfway through the year. None in the Big-7 could compare. NV went on to win the Big-7 League title outright; this was only the second time in the school's history this was done.

Sub-state was the last obstacle to overtake. In the second game the Horton Chargers had plans of taking the Bunch out of the tourney. In the second post-period, Horton's last prayer, fell short. NV went on to destroy Jackson Heights, 77-44, in the final.

A spark seldom seen in teams was witnessed by the hundred of spectators that saw NV at Hutch. Mission Valley was the first to fall to the top-seeded Raider team. In the second round Holcomb played NV close. The Wild Bunch took the game by five.

NV exploded in the first half of the final by taking a ten point lead. In the second half Wellsville came to life. However, NV held a three point lead as Wellsville's hopes faded at the buzzer.

Raider teams will look back to the 1988 season and reflect. Perhaps by then the Wild Bunch will be a legend. However, no matter how successful teams of the future will be, no one can better the Wild Bunch.
