Victorious athletes do not arise out of publicity; they are created from talent and determination. The Raider basketball team did an excellent job of demonstrating that a team can be successful while not letting this fact inflate their egos.

A fantastic season started off right with the team, coached by Steve and Assistant Jon Thomas, stealing the championship at the Kaw Valley Tournament. Victories and more victories decorated the path of the Raiders to a third place ranking in state and a 13-0 record by mid-season.

A disappointing loss to Hiawatha didn't stop the Raiders from capturing the championship in the Raider Classic. After suffering three additional losses in the regular season to Sabetha, Jeff West, and Effingham, the team was anxious as sub-state approached. Easy victories over Jeff West and Effingham brought the Raiders to the final round against Immaculata. This game proved to be the most stimulating of all, with the Raiders making their dream become a reality by capturing the sub-state title after overcoming a halftime deficit of 18 points.

Once at Hutch, the Raiders suffered a loss in the first round to Hillsboro, the defending state champs. Although their season was ended with this loss, the team felt incredibly proud of themselves for getting to Hutch and finishing the season with a 19-5 record.

Vertical dominance is an important asset as Mark, (42), jr., shows, while Roger, (25), jr., awaits a possible rebound. The Raiders went on to defeat Hiawatha 61-51. (Photo by Carroll)
