Nemaha Valley High School
1985

In 1984, the golf team came up a few strokes short as they finished second in the 3A-2A-1A state golf championship. This year, however, Mark Sample shot a 79 to spearhead the group past Sacred Heart by one stroke 334-335 for the school's first state golf championship. Monday, May 13, was a windy, wet day and golf coach Rick Hynek described the Hesston Country Club's course as "rough and tough." The tournament was close the whole way, and Coach Hynek explained the edge that aided the Raiders' win. "The factor which dictated the way the day went was Sample's 79. He had been averaging in the medium 80's and he came through at the state championship, when he shot much better than he had during the season." Hynek added, "The other determinant was based on the fact that Brad Henry gave up his senior trip to compete and help us win, which I feel we could not have accomplished without him. His actions gave the other members the incentive to play better, not only for themselves ,but for Brad, because he gave up a lot more to be down on the trip than they did." The season was exceptional for the team, as they captured eight trophies, eighty-five medals, and the varsity team shot an 86 average for the season. Bright skies are in the future for the Raiders, because 5 of the 6 players will be returning and there is some talent on the JV level. Mr. Hynek closed by saying, "As long as we maintain the same attitude as we had this year, which was excellent, we should have the ability to defend our state championship next year."
