According to Webster's dictionary, golf is an outdoor sport played on a large course with a small hard ball and a set of clubs. The object being to hit the ball into each of a series of nine or eighteen holes using the fewest possible strokes. It sounds pretty easy, however, any of the ten golfers would have argued that point. In fact, many of the golfers learned that there were hooks, slices, hazards, and a variety of other problems to deal with. Despite the difficulties, the game was mastered by several of the golfers. The scores ranged from the upper 30's on into the 50's. However, the team seemed to fall apart during the meets. Coach Rick Hynek said, "There was always maybe one who golfed well, but we never had four golf well at one meet." This was evident as the team failed to take first in any of the meets. The team was anchored by Jason Henry, soph., in the number one position, and Michael O' Keefe, sr., in the second spot. The rest of the varsity squad consisted of Travis Jeanneret, soph., Scott Haverkamp, jr., Russ Jinkens, jr., and Gregg Robke, sr. The junior varsity consisted of Brian Toby, jr., Brian Boeding, sr., Scott Heinen, jr., and Mark Fleury, soph. Even though the golfers seemed to experience a lack of success, they improved their games and had fun while doing it. As with all sports, it is much more enjoyable to win. "It would have been more fun if we would have done better in the tournaments," said Jeanneret. Coach Hynek echoed the thought when he said that the only thing he would have changed was that he would have liked more success for his golfers.
