Golf is a sport of patience, concentration, and practice. For most, success is measured in the number of strokes. However, when the scores do not show a successful day, the golfer can leave the course with a grin on his face because he still had fun. With no first place trophies, and only three medalists during the season, expectation for a state appearance dwindled and died with a sixth place finish at regionals. However, there were many moments to be remembered. During practice, senior Russ Jinkens' three wood somehow lodged itself in the upper branches of a tree off of the number six tee box. Also during the Jeff West triangular, Brian Toby, sr., tied for second place, forcing a playoff with a Hiawatha golfer. The gallery, consisting of the golf team, numerous bags of loud corn chips, and a stray dog, followed the competitor through two holes of sudden death playoff. Toby took second place followed by a "victory roll" from his teammates. "I couldn't feel the pressure; I was too busy trying not to laugh during the extra holes," said Toby. With the season over, most would not be pleased with the outcome. Yet, the members smiled and kept it in the proper perspective. How serious can a game be that was invented by cavemen.
