If asked the question, "What do you think about the sport of golf?" It would not be too surprising to find someone who would say that golf is not a real sport: people play it for relaxation. While it is true that some people play the game of golf for the pure enjoyment and relaxation, the golf team at Nemaha Valley played it for the thrill of the competition. Everyday the members of the golf team could be found out on the course, whether they were perfecting their putting on the green or mastering their tee-off drive. The hard working team didn't take the SPORT of golf lightly, and the record they left behind could prove it. "All year we had a goal to take a team to state and of course we all wanted to place, whether as a team or as individuals. We all worked hard to get there," Mike Hynek, jr.,said. And "get there" is just what they did. A 6-man team made up of Jason Mueting, Mike Hynek, David Kohake, Brandon Nordhus, Steven Rusche, and Brad Hynek traveled to Hesston for state competition after qualifying at regional. After back-to-back state titles in '85 and '86, the golf team had hit a rather dry spell, but this team was determined to make history once again and bring home a state title. Not only did the team place first, but several of the members medaled by placing as individuals in the state competiotion. "It was really great to go down and compete my senior year, I thought we all did a great job, and it was nice to be able to win a state championship," Jason Mueting, sr. said. The end of the season rolled around with a very satisfying outcome, and many of the state team members and up and coming golf enthusiasts will be back to compete next year and try once again to make history.
