I am Tiger Woods; I am Tiger Woods; I am Tiger Woods. Most of us have seen
all of the Tiger Woods commercials on television. In them, every kid wants to
be like Tiger Woods, the phenomenal golfer who has taken the golf world by storm
by winning numerous tournaments against old pros. Likewise, the Nemaha Valley
golfers wanted to be just as successful as the young Tiger Woods who is not
much older than them at 21. The team turned out to be a lot like Tiger Woods.
The team was young like Woods, and the team was as successful as him also. The
varsity team placed first at the Nemaha Valley triangular golf meet. Brad Hynek,
jr., and Eric Mueting, soph., turned out some outstanding performances by placing
first and third respectively. Hynek also placed third at the Hiawatha triangular
where the team placed third behind a strong showing by Mueting who placed second.
The varsity didn't just stop after the regular season was over. They had the
postseason on their mind. The team tore the course apart by placing first in
regionals. The young varsity team then finished the season strong by taking
seventh at state. "We were all a little nervous down at state, but we did well.
We'll be even better next year with all of our experience," Brad Hynek, jr.,
said. The junior varsity might not have had as much recognition as the varsity,
but that din't stop them from being successful. For the first time ever, the
junior varsity league meet was held at Nemaha Valley. The team placed fourth,
and Phil Bennett, fr., lit up the course by finishing second. With a young team
that improved with each and every practice and meet, the tradition of Nemaha
Valley golf will continue throughout the years. Maybe even someday, Nemaha Valley's
golf program will produce the next Tiger Woods.

Mark Downing, soph., David Dalzel, soph., and Dustin Deters,
fr., get ready to tee it up on one of the many qualifying days. Because
so many scores were close, these days were nerve racking because a good
day could put you on the team, but a bad one could take you off.

Doug Strathman, fr., practices his putting on the practice
green. Practicing every day after school helped the golfers improve their
game.
