The smell of freshly cut grass wafts through the air as a warm breeze blows over the greens. Sunlight is filtered by the tall trees that line the course. The still silence is broken only by the chirping of birds and the sound of golf clubs slicing through the air. In the midst of this calmness, adrenaline pumps through the blood as the competitive drive kicks in. This is the afternoon of a golfer. When golfers arrive at a competition, they do not compete with their own team members, as many may think. They are split into groups that contain a member from every school that is competing. This makes each golfer independent of his team and also puts them at an advantage. Being with golfers from other schools gives the golfers an opportunity to learn new techniques and tricks to improve their golf game. It also lets the golfers meet new people. The varsity golf team once again had a year to be proud of. The team placed first at the NV Triangular and Marysville Invitational. They accomplished third places at the Sabetha Invitational, Sabetha Triangular, and Jeff West Triangular. The Hiawatha Invitational handed the team a sixth place finish. When the team competed in the Big Seven League Tournament, the team also placed sixth. "I was happy with my performance at regionals. State was a fun experience for me, and I know we can come back and do even better next year," Weston Boeding, fr., said. The class 3A regional meet was held on May 18th. It took place on the Nemaha Valley course. The team placed third, advancing six golfers on to state competition in Junction City. This difficult course proved to be a challenge for the golf team, and they came home with a ninth place finish. "We didn't do as well as we wanted to, but this was a course we weren't used to. We hope we'll improve next year and maybe come back as state champion," Chris Hynek, soph., said
