Running Towards the Finish Line
By: Kate Harris
Imagine you are at the starting line of a 200-meter race. You take your starting
position
on the starting block, and kneel down. “Runners to your marks. Get
set…go!” You
hear the gunfire and you take off. You run as fast as you can and
only have one goal in
mind: reaching the finish line. You round a curve and see
the finish line getting closer and
closer as you approach it. Finally, you get there
and run through the finish line string.
You are done, and have successfully
completed a race. How do you feel? Well of
course, you feel a sense of
accomplishment and excitement. This is what track offers to individuals.
The Raider and Lady Raider track teams had a successful year. This success
came with
a lot of hard work and dedication. The team practiced almost
everyday after school,
unless there was a track meet.
The boys finished second in league and second in regionals. The girls finished
second in
league and first in regionals. The track team also sent eight boys and
eight girls to the
state track meet. Shawnae’ Allen received fourth in the pole
vault, Lori Feldkamp
placed third in the 200 meter race, Olivia Korte placed
first in the discuss and fourth in
the shot put, Kelsey Leuger placed fifth in high
jump, Jared Niehues placed fourth in the
javelin, Lisa Runnebaum placed fifth in
the 300 meter hurdles, Joe Schultejans placed
fifth in the 400 meter race, and
Kevin Stallbaumer placed fourth in the 1600 meter race.
“This year’s track season went pretty well. We had steady improvement all
season
long and both teams finished very high in the league,” Mr. Thomas, head
track coach,
stated.
The track athletes truly worked hard and to their full potential everyday. The
saying, “you only get out what you put in,” describes the sport of track.
“If you are considering going out for track be prepared to work hard. Your
success
might not come until the end of the season, however, until conditioning
has had a chance to take effect,” Mr. Thomas, said.
The track team worked hard from the beginning of the season up until the end.
They
kept their expectations high and realistic, and never gave up until they reached
the
finish line.
